Dick called me this morning as he was driving to the park to perform his TD duties:

Dick: So will your recent string of beat downs of me continue or will you choke under tourney pressure?

Hawk: Who’s calling please?

Arriving at the park Dick’s got his babe magnet ride and a card table set up as he goes tourney minimalist:

In this photo (courtesy of Jorge) you’ll note several things:

1. Clearly my NutSac polos are way too big for me.

2. Dick appears to be holding a plate of cookies.

3. Service is diligently filling out scorecards so players know which baskets to throw to.

4. As with approximately half of the participants I signed in for Dick these gentlemen are flummoxed by my instructions:

Hawk: Step up and identify yourself.

Player X: I’m Player X.

Hawk: Sign your scorecard and put today’s date on it.

Player X: What is today’s date?

Hawk: Seriously. How do you navigate through your existence without this kind of basic information?

Player X: Ummmm

Hawk: Now place your card on the scoreport on whichever hole you would like to start on. Foursomes only!

Player X: Ummm…

This was repeated 65+ times…

Dick projects calm command and confidence moments before the players meeting:

The players pay dutiful attention and wonder why Dick isn’t wearing a bra:

Here Dick gestures to the parking lot where the most important part of the tourney will take place for him…

…the hot dog cart!

Dick: Any questions?

Hawk: What’s your current weight?

Dick: A svelte 255!

Round one has me carded with Coach, Jason and Dick:

Note Coach with his copyright violation Punisher disc, Jason wishing he was one some other card, me flashing the official NutSac gang sign, and Dick proudly holding his #10 tag which he courageously put up against Jason. Card photo courtesy of this dogs…

…owner. We started on hole #19 which was a temporary hole to accommodate the overflow of players. Here Dick misses his putt for a three on #1:

Dick got the course “closed” for the tourney:

I’d like to see this “permit”. On #3 Coach bombed this putt in for a deuce:

Dick matches Coach with his own deuce on #3:

Waiting out the back-up on #4 we watch Dub launch this spike hyzer…

…up and over the top to land within 20′ of the basket. We ohhhh and ahhhh appropriately.

Dick unleashes a kneeling prayer putt on #5:

His prayers went unanswered. On #6 Coach saves his three with this putt:

Some random player didn’t have the energy to take his trash with him from the tee on #9:

Dick’s second shot on #9:

This flick actually cleared the creek and landed 10′ from the basket. I was momentarily worried. Backed up again on #11 we watch Dub tee off:

At this point I notice that the camera battery is low. Zink tees of on #11…

…and parks it for a deuce. While standing at #11′s tee we see the card ahead of Dub’s card teeing off from #12′s old tee. Dick begins to bellow at them. Apparently Course Contact Billstream has recreated the original 12 tee with some bricks and flags. Here Dick tees off on #12:

He hits some trees on the left side and ends up on the other side…

…of the fence. If I had been about 10 seconds quicker I would have had the pic of him actually crawling under the fence with his ass up in the air. Coach and I are totally bummed at this failing. If it’s #14 at Rockburn, you know I deuced it:

Note Dick in the background trying to put his three on this hole out of his mind. On #16 Dick takes out his Titanium Stalker which he’s never thrown and tees off with it:

He powered it into the big tree you see over his hat. Round one concludes:

Hawk: 59

Dick: 61

Before helping Dick check scorecards etc. etc. I eat and observe this on the other side of the parking lot:

Apparently the course isn’t closed if you have a bow and a quiver of arrows! Returning to the relocated tourney central I think I spot Cooke shaving in his trucks mirror:

He insists he’s merely applying some sunscreen…and scented moisturizer. Round 2 has me carded with Coach again (matching 59′s) Andrew and Brandon. Here Coach saves a three on #11:

This occurred during my string ‘o 4′s and annoyed me. #14 once again:

This one briefly got the boys excited as it passed the basket on the right before hyzering behind it. After a decade they should know…I never ace. The round continues. I conserve the cameras battery. At the back-up on #4 I see Dick and inform him I’m +5. He reports being +3. Oh oh! That would make us tied for the day. Andrew makes this putt on #5…

…for a deuce. See the pic of Coach on #6 above from the first round. It’s the same putt as he over approaches the basket again to save a three in round 2 on #6…

…but slightly further back. Note to self-stop taking pics of Coach putting. He makes too many of them when the camera is out. My plan for the front nine was to 3 my way around (except for the obligatory 4 on #4) and assume Dick won’t rally. With two holes to go we arrive at #7. I melt down and eat a 5. I’m sure this will be the dagger that allows Dick to rally past me for the days win. I recover to get a 3 on #8. The round complete I force the boys to take the group pic:

Coach is oblivious to Andrew’s hi-jinks and Brandon is eyeing the quickest route to the parking lot so he can roll out and begin his re-hydration in front of some televised baseball.

Back at tourney central we’re one of the first cards in. I change out of the disc shoes into some flip flops and head back to find Dick. I want to leave. I’ve been here for 10 hours now. I find Dick death marching back from finishing on #10:

Dick: 64 (125)

Hawk: 65 (124)

NutSac Challenge Standings:

Jerman: 3

Dick: 1

YDGH: 1

Finally popped my cherry! More photos in the group. Tourney results are here:

http://www.pdga.com/tournament_results/93000

I’ve taken my bows, and my curtain calls,

YDGH

Friday evening while watching the Rangers stick it to the Angels I text Dick to see if he wants to throw Rockburn again Saturday morning in preparation for next weeks Rumble. I don’t hear back from him. Saturday I roll out to do some errands and while grabbing some lunch my phone goes off at 12:09 p.m. It’s a text message from Dick:

What time?

In Dick time 12:09 is still “morning”. I reply that I can meet him at 1:00. Match on. I arrive at Rockburn and mosey down to #18 to stretch and throw a couple of 10′ putts. I hear players loitering down around the basket. It’s a couple of shirtless dudes and a tan blonde in a bikini top, and daisy dukes. This never happens in disc! We all chat and miss some putts. The blonde begins doing a series of yoga poses. I desperately try and figure out a way to get a pic of this that isn’t totally perv. I fail. Dick and I spend the first six holes of our match trying to figure out how to get a pic of her. We fail. Dick arrives. He’s dressed like the Good Humor man.

On hole #1 I spot the elaborate signs Dick has crafted to promote his Rumble tourney next weekend:

I now realize why Dick’s career on Madison Ave. never really took off. Dick botches his approach on #1 after his roller drive goes awry to take a 4 to my 3. Loitering at #2 waiting for the hole to clear and the blonde with the Styrofoam beer cooler and her buddies to hole out on #1:

Dick’s speed 13 Groove vs. my speed 6 Leopard after we tee off on #2:

On #4 Dick’s 2nd shot left him with a less than ideal approach to the basket:

While putting out on #4 the group on #5 is teeing off. We hear one of their drives crashing into the canopy over our heads. It’s 70′ up in the air. We wait. Player X saunters down the hill.

Hawk: Looking for green?

Player X: Yeah.

Hawk: Up there. (I point to the sky)

Player X looks up befuddled. Dick picks ups a large tree branch.

Dick: I’ll get it.

Hawk: I don’t think you can throw that all the way up there.

Dick: Watch this.

Dick flings the branch skyward and a faded green Wraith tumbles to the ground. Dick gestures like a cruise ship magician doing a card trick…

Dick: Is this your disc?

Player X: Uh…no.

Hawk: It’s still up there.

Dick flings the branch skyward again. This time Player X’s disc falls to the ground and Dick again does the magicians hand sweep…

Dick: Is this your disc?

Player X: Uh…yes.

Dick: Ta dah!

On #5 things get even more interesting. We’ve rolled up on a young couple playing a round. Yes believe it or not we’ve found a second woman actually playing disc on the course! Dick tries to pimp out his tourney to the two of them. He tees off to impress the lady and promptly turns the Groove over into the right side treeline. He’s confident he knows where it is. Dick is the best spotter I play with. He can usually find his errant throw, or yours, quicker than anyone else. He can’t find the Groove. We can’t find the Groove. We look for about 25 minutes. Finally he throws in the towel and does the walk of shame back to the tee. He re-tees and we both hole out. He then says he knows where the Groove is based on his observation from his second tee shot. He moseys over to the rough and finds the disc in 30 seconds:

Note the raised green disc in the center of the pic above. He then asks if he can complete the hole from this position. Since it’s practice I graciously agree. He takes a 4 to my 3. On number 6 I get another throw. On #7 I Coyote near the basket in what Dick thought was an ace run. Dick also parks the basket with his JK Aviar:

Note Dick indicating how much closer he is than I am with my red Coyote. I go back to back deuces on #8 when I park the basket…

…and pick up another throw on Dick. On #9 Dick’s second shot gets wet…

…giving me two more throws. Scores on the front:

Hawk: 27

Dick: 33

On #11 I zip down the tunnel fairway and think I’m fairly close to the basket. Dick Boyd’s his drive into the ground 40′ up the fairway and his second shot leaves him with this effort for his three:

It zips past the basket chain high for a four. Meanwhile I convert this drive…

…for another deuce. Note Dick disgustedly returning my KC Aviar to me after my successful putt. Apparently some of that Japanese tsunami debris has already washed ashore on hole #12:

Dick begins a brief rally by sinking this putt for a three on #12:

As we get to #13′s tee Dick declares that he wants to move #14′s basket to the A position in preparation for next Saturday’s tourney. Apparently this involves him unlocking the basket and me carrying it to the shorter position.

Hawk: Why am I carrying the basket?

Dick: You lift weights.

This is also part of Dick’s plan to give him a shot at a deuce in this practice round. On #13 Dick parks the basket for a deuce and picks up a throw on me. Here Dick tees off on #14 in step 1 of his diabolical deuce conspiracy:

The tie dye JLS is a bit short. Step 2 is to convert this putt…

…which he missed. I pick up another throw by making my deuce. Waiting to tee off on #15 I find this sign on a piece of construction equipment:

I thought this was the best sign of the day until I received this one via email from Sassy:

Dick: You’re two down!

Hawk: Really?

Dick: This is your best round ever here.

Hawk: You think?

Dick: Oh yeah….

Dick Boyd’s his drive on #15 which is doubly impressive as it’s hard to throw your drive into the ground on a downhill shot:

He manages to get halfway to the creek. Meanwhile I’ve teed off unaware that the basket has been moved from the C position to the B position on the other side of the creek. Apparently though the Batman Leopard knows this as it s curves around the tree in the middle of the fairway and then turns left down the path towards #16′s tee where the basket is. Dick is disgusted at this turn of events. Having realized he’s double digit throws behind me Dick enters Flutie mode. This is disc:

His second shot on #15 is a repeat of his second shot on #9:

Note the powerful looking forearm as Dick shamefully retrieves his pink Cro from the creek. I’m unsure if Dick was red faced from being 10 throws back, from having hit the water for his second OB penalty of the round, or for being photographed as owning a pink Cro. I pick up two more throws on #15 and another throw on #16. On #17 I tee off and hyzer up the fairway for a safe 3. As Dick prepares to tee off he spots someone wandering the hole around the bend. It’s someone in a yellow t-shirt. Dick botches the drive. As we round the bend I call out:

Hawk: Is that Service? I think I recognize the limp!

Greg: Hawk…you’re looking slim from here.

Hawk: You mean in comparison to my playing partner.

Greg: The juxtaposition certainly helps!

Dick: F you both. Hey Greg I moved the basket on #14 for the tourney.

Hawk: Excuse me?

Dick: Okay I unlocked the basket and Hawk carried it down the hill.

Dick makes an impressive 70′ putt to save his three on #17. Here’s Service and his toys on #18:

He was out doing some pre tourney course maintenance. Scores on the back:

Hawk: 25 (52)

Dick: 31 (64)

Hopefully I didn’t shoot my wad one week too early. Scorecard courtesy of Dick’s Association smart phone App. You can take the State Coordinator out of the boy, but not his toolness! You know where more photos are. Next up Dick and I repeat the past two Saturdays next Saturday at his Rumble where one of us will get a NutSac Challenge point since Jerman is not playing the tourney!

Throw softly my friends,

Dick and I rolled in this morning for a 10 a.m. practice round for the upcoming Rumble. I arrived at 0957. Dick arrived 3 minutes late i.e. 1018. Dick time is always somewhere between 10 and 15 minutes later than everyone else’s time.

Being last to arrive Dick has to tee off first. He promptly parks #1 with his green Groove and makes this putt…

…for a quick deuce and the lead. We match each other until hole #6 where I make a heroic 40′ turnover putt through several trees to save a three. Rattled, Dick misses his comparatively easy 3 putt to eat the 4. On #8 I call the downhill basket. Dick’s drive is short of the clowns mouth. I’m not. 3 for me. 4 for Dick. On #9 my second throw is in the creek. Hello circle 5! Dick takes a 4.

It’s 31-31 at the turn.

The back nine starts off with two more pushes until I unleash this drive on #12:

I make the putt for my first deuce of the day! I follow that up with a deuce on #13. Dick rallies back by deucing #14. Dick kills his momentum by taking a dry 4 on #15. As we enter Billfold Alley Dick waits for me to collapse as he enters Flutie mode. His drive on #16 is yanked and smacks an extremely early tree. I take a three to his five. On #18 I hit early and take a four while Dick threes.

Hawk: 28 (59)

Dick: 31 (62)

Walking up #18 we find the man who built Rockburn and the inspiration for Billfold Alley, Billstream himself:

Note Dick trying to weasel his way into the shot. A couple more pics of Dick flailing are in the Yahoo! group.

Salud,

Saturday:

I roll into the park about 0830 one hour before the players meeting. Jerman and Jorge are already out on the course warming up. I loiter around tourney central after signing my card waiting for the sun to come out. This never happens. Eventually I head out to throw a couple of holes myself. I stumble across the old tee for #2…

…which is now an abandoned tee on the right side on #10′s fairway. Considering how difficult this tourney usually is, why don’t we throw from here? Apparently clever tee signs are going to be the order of the weekend:

As a professional in the solid waste industry I was very impressed with the well organized trash and recycling system El Tie Dye had set up:

Here’s the biggest tool move I’ve ever seen. You mount a camera on your own bag to take pictures of yourself playing!

Brian is very excited on his first day working at Playboy!

Sigh…

El Tie Dye projects an air of calm confidence at tourney central that everything is totally under control:

Note the PA speaker in the background. YDGH and Sparky representing Team “Sac before the round:

Sparky was rolling with just a Yeti Aviar, a Roc, a Roadrunner and a Mamba. He has drunk the four disc Kool-Aid. So Craig takes the microphone and conducts the players meeting for El Tie Dye. We start to yell out karaoke requests for Freebird and It’s Raining Men. Craig refuses to sing Freebird. Player X next to me says it reminds him of a bad DJ at a wedding reception. “Ladies and gentlemen please get ready for the Father/Daughter dance.” Several of us giggle uncontrollably. As Craig pontificates the players lose interest and begin to look for their starting holes on the score-port:

Now it’s looking like a stump speech by a failed Republican primary candidate and the audience is digging into the free appetizers set out by the campaign. I’m starting on hole 9…

…with Jerman, Craig and JDot:

You’ll note in this photo that Jer continues his transformation to complete Keanu Reevesness. Craig has that look that says, “I’m 1000 rated and am going to pound you” and JDot is wistfully thinking about online porn. So the pounding begins:

JDot says I can pound you also:

I’m not really sure why JDot always dresses like a cat burglar. Here you’ll see me with my typical first drive of the day at Seneca:

Note the disc turning to the right. Yes it hit the tree. Yes it was a 5 to open the tourney. Jerman on the other hand manages to easily hit the opening:

Craig’s first hole of the day equals Craig’s first deuce of the day:

Did I mention I took a five? Craig on #10 nearly pulls this off:

Later in the round Jerman goes: “He spends half the round on his knees and he’s killing us.” Jerman gives me early hope on #11 when his drive lands him here which is somewhere you don’t want to be:

On #13 we come across this tee sign:

This sounds like a bachelorette game you’d find on DancingBear.com. Feel free to insert your own joke here. Here you see the official spotter on #13 Bill wearing the El Tie Dye uniform:

That creek behind JDot and Bill is OB…more on that later. Here Craig shows why he’s 1000 rated and I’m not:

OB 10′ behind the basket. 45′ out. No fear. This drive on #14 by Craig…

…leads to this deuce on #14 by Craig:

Jerman: This is awful.

Hawk: You’re just having a bad round. I’m having a horrific round.

Just when things are getting really depressing you find something on the course to cheer you up:

Another deuce by Craig on #2:

El Tie Dye officially announces his acceptance of his disc nickname:

Jerman teeing off on #3:

If you look closely you can read my lips as I mutter “Hyzer OB…hyzer OB…” JDot actually did hyzer OB, but makes this putt…

…for a circle three! Yeah…another hole (#5)…another Craig deuce:

The round mercifully comes to an end.

Jerman: 66

Hawk: 71

Earlier in the week Jorge had told me he was done side-betting Jer: “I just can’t beat him.” Jorge ends up shooting 63 in the Grandmothers division. He promptly side-bets Jer for the second round. Do you really need to keep reading to find out what happens there?

Lunch is catered beef BBQ and some veggie wraps. I pass on the veggie wrap. It’s a a quick turnaround for the second round. My hot 71 has me on the DFL card one shot ahead of DFL. I’m with Larry and Dan. You may recall I spent the second round at the Punisher with Larry who quickly tailighted me. I must pound him and keep Dan behind me to avoid DFL…

Larry teeing off on #20:

Ole’! Here’s Dan teeing off on #20:

I’ve seen several Captain America dyes out there this season, but Dan’s is by far the best:

Larry nails this putt on #25 for the deuce:

Daddy that man keeps looking at me…

We’re behind the lead card which is Craig, Brinster, Schwebby and JG. El Tie Dye is spotting/helping the flow on #10 that is backing up. As we are standing there with him watching the leaders tee off El Tie Dye informs us that the four of them just went -5 on #27! Brinster aced and the other three deuced. Suddenly my +4 through 10 holes isn’t feeling so impressive. El Tie Dye also points out that I need to make sure I at least out shoot the last lady. Thanks coach!

So we get to #13 again and I again chicken out from the left side OB creek and turn my drive into the hillside. Safe, but stupid. Instead of just safely plopping back out to the fairway (which I had done in the morning much to Craig’s approval) I decide to get aggressive i.e. stupid. Shot #2 hyzers OB as it fails to hold the turnover. Shot #3 curls around the corner and looks to be safe on the hill again. I walk around the corner and the red Coyote is OB! I had been so disgusted with the first round that I did the complete NutSac switch and left the original bag and discs in the trunk and played the second round with the olive bag and the back-up Leopard, Coyote and Aviar. As we all know it has to be the discs…never the thrower. Only the Batman Leopard came with me to do battle with Captain America. Hence the red Coyote is OB instead of the normal yellow Coyote. According to the spotter my third throw caught the hill, rolled across the fairway, over the OB line, up a tree trunk, down the tree trunk, tried to get back in bounds but failed. Throw #4 lands next to the basket which was at that point 80′ away. Throw #5 is in the basket. Hello double circle 7. Goodbye reeling Jerman in this round.

Larry makes this putt for a three on #15:

I got a four which was a moral victory. Larry (74) Dan (76)…

…YDGH 66! I’m thinking I’ve made up some ground on Jerman.

Jerman: 66.

Jorge goes all suicide bomber in round 2, shoots 78 in the Grandmothers division and pays Jer $10. Cha-ching!

Sunday:

Five throws back with 27 holes to play. The fisherman can do this!

Ummm…

…yeah…anyways…

This is going to be a 5 hour round. El Tie Dye has decided to implement the lunch strategy he employed at the IB:

Yeah baby! I’m with Bud (from the MD/VA IB) and Andrew. Bud is also rather toolish. Note his Association disc and bizarre shoelaces:

Bud is two throws ahead of me after yesterday. I really want to beat Bud. I’ve already got not being DFL covered as Larry and some other coward didn’t come back for day two of “fun”. Bud is wearing an outback hat with and pin that says, “Whoever has the most fun wins”. I really want to beat Bud! We’re starting on #9. I started the horror round yesterday on #9. Cue menacing background music. I don’t hit the right side cedar on my drive this time. I go through the right side cedar to make it halfway up the fairway. I declare a moral victory. Thus begins a round of misery and mediocrity. Bud is carrying 20 discs!

I really want to beat Bud. The middle loop of nine at Seneca is considered the hardest loop. So after #9 we enter…the loop of death. Normally I’d like to get through those holes with a 33-35. I go 44! That’s 17 over. I can’t even begin to detail for you how horrible it was without breaking out into a cold sweat. The best I can do is briefly summarize:

#12 Set up for the 3, botched approach 4.

#13 Refusing to repeat the debacle of the day before, I man up and power down the fairway. Circle 7.

#14: 6

#15: 5

#16: Missed putt…4

#17: 30′ drive…4

I stagger out to #19′s tee where I run into El Tie Dye. I tell him what just happened. He’s amused and horrified. He says he could beat that playing a speed round with a Roc. I tell him I could also. At this point I have 16 more holes to go with absolutely no chance of catching Jerman. What…he’s going to go 50 on one of these nines? I don’t think so. El Tie Dye pumps me up by pointing out that I was tied for second (out of 3) of the ladies division yesterday, and that I should still try and finish not DFL among everyone who actually plays three rounds. What a pep talk coach!

Bud teeing off on #21:

Followed by Andrew:

Andrew’s putter after his approach on #21:

I start making some putts and actually put up a decent number on the back nine after thinking long and hard about just getting in the car at #19. They’ve got #23 all the way back. Bud is hacking his way through the forest on the right side. Andrew and I are taking the more conventional route.

Spotter Clark: Are you guys the last card?

Hawk: No. 2nd to last. Why?

Clark: Well I’ve been watching the level of play improve on this hole all morning as each card comes by. The leaders just came through and Brinster actually threed this. Then you guys showed up.

Sigh…

This is why you keep playing…

I’m laying three at the clowns mouth where the mando is and I’ve just had that inspiring chat with Clark. It’s a very tight tunnel down to the basket. I take the red Coyote and remind myself to not overthrow it (like you do when you are panicing in Flutie mode and gripping and ripping) and ease the Coyote all the way down to park the basket 150′ away. You can see it next to the basket as Andrew putts for his 5:

One of my top ten throws ever. Bud’s bid for 5 on #23:

All day Saturday El Tie Dye kept asking me: Did you see Rich’s sponsor sign?

I kept telling him no. So we get to #25 and here it is:

Dick teabagging me a couple of years ago when we as the Nomads won our group in the Maryland Team Matchplay to advance to the afternoon round and I was changing my shoes. Welcome to disc!

We finish the back nine and pull into tourney central for our pit stop lunch. Then the disc equivalent of a Bigfoot sighting occurs…it’s Metl!

No one has actually seen him in several years on a course. No one knew for sure where he was or what he was doing. The consensus leaned towards a Bangkok prison. He and I were in the Nomads together. He ran the Nomads website for me. The best blog you could ever read would be a round with Metl and me on the same card.

During lunch I realize that Bud’s mustache makes him look like Higgins from Magnum P.I.

On #2 Andrew boldly goes for this putt to save his 3:

It’s a five…

Spotting on #5 are the wise men of Seneca…Brady, Steve and Mr. Bill:

Andrew and Bud pose near the completion of our round:

Andrew ties me for the round to stay ahead of me and Bud beats me by four throws to stay ahead of me…sigh.

Jerman: 99 (231)

Hawk: 113 (250)

I was torn between getting a practice round in at Seneca for next weekends Soiree and making another DFL Tour stop at the DO Days at Rockburn and taking a swing at the Grilled Cheese gift card. Jerman was unavailable and Dick was non-responsive so I decided to tackle the 27 holes at Seneca one last time with the Leopard/Leopard set up.

Seneca:

The future of tee signs or a historical remnant from the wild west days of disc:

I cross paths with Buckethead and Larry who are in the process of moving the baskets into the positions for next weekends first round. Bucket had brilliantly suckered Larry into “helping” him move the baskets. From what I observed this consists of Bucket unlocking the basket and Larry doing the heavy lifting:

Pardon me but I was putting there! I was walking from hole 26′s basket to 27′s tee when I saw a man (with a Nutsac) walking towards 12′s tee…with a woman. I thought it was Sparky, but the presence of a woman made me doubt this. As I was teeing off on #11 I spy a very attractive woman with a NutSac on her shoulder walking down #10. I take my second throw on #11 and set up a stalking position thinking WWDD? (What Would Dick Do?) Eventually she, a man and a dog (Murphy) come over the crest. It’s his NutSac. It’s not Sparky. Here is cult member Jack and his NutSac:

Note the bitchin’ embroidery. Interesting story here. Jack and the woman (name unknown, but good pull Jack!) got married last year and Jack ordered 10 NutSac’s from Greg to give away as groomsmen gifts. While Jack and I were discussing this his wife is checking out my NutSac and goes:

Hawk’s is bigger than yours honey.

Having heard this many times before I leave a crestfallen Jack behind and press on with my round. Here’s the new blue tee on #14:

I always picture a basement somewhere with a big rectangle of carpeting missing in the center of the room. This is disc!:

It’s just past the sewer opening… Here’s the new blue tee on #15:

You know my history with #15. I got a 4. Take that #15! As I prepare to tee off on 15 I spy a couple of players putzing around up around the basket. Here’s the new blue tee on #16:

I get to the tee and confirm my earlier suspicion that the couple in front of me is Sparky and his new lady friend. I failed to get a photo of the happy couple. She already seemed embarrassed enough to be caught out in public with Sparky that I didn’t want to pile on.

The 27 completed I attend to two important tasks:

1. lunch

2. procuring a new chili pot

I accomplish both of those tasks and realize I could get to Rockburn before 3:30; the announced time of the DO Days closing. I speed off towards Rockburn.

Rockburn:

I arrive at 3:15. It’s just Joel and Brian. Everyone else has already been through. Brian agrees to let me go out solo and try and not be DFL in the Gold division. There were only 4 Gold participants and the scores were 55-55-57-57. I wasn’t feeling confident about beating/tying 57, but being a hero I had to try. First up is another try at the grilled cheese CTP. It’s not scary close to the basket. Brian explains that everyone had been trying to win plastic so the Grilled Cheese gift card didn’t get as much play as the plastic CTP’s. I’ve got enough plastic to last a career. I want grilled cheese! I step up and let fly with my one free try with the white Aviar:

Winner! Yeah baby…

Joel & Brian pimping plastic…

…I mean spreading the game! So with scorecard in hand I head out to face my destiny:

I’ve got the back-up bag of discs I’m working with today and I’d reverted back to my original style of putting (no more all straddle all the time) at Seneca with good success. This drive on #1…

…gives me confidence that I might be able to make a run at this thing. I miss the putt. I make a heroic putt on #2 to save the three. I convert this drive on #3…

…for a deuce for an early run at 53. I screw up number 4 and number 6. Number 7′s tee sign features a gang tag…

…suburbs style! I have my best drive ever on #7 with the Coyote:

I’m 1o’ away from the B pin. The basket is back in C. I fluff the approach. Sigh…however with the new/old putting style I sink the 25′er to save the 3. I’m +1 when I get to #9. There I catch up with a couple who are playing while pushing a baby stroller. Rockburn is not stroller friendly. I offer some advice on which holes to play and try and figure out how to get a picture of the lady. I’d already botched the photo op with Jack’s wife. I go 0-2 on the day. I unleash the Coyote on #9 and clear all the trees and am either across or in the creek. As I mosey down the hill I predict to the couple that I’m in the creek:

Winner! I was probably about 4′ too low to clear it. I finish the front nine at 29. I see 57 slipping away.

#10-heroic putt to save the 3.

#11-botched approach equals a 4.

#12 & 13-3′s

#14-deuce baby! (again)

#15-I play through a group of four. The Leopard is hyzering early and we all think I’m wet in the creek. Arriving I discover that I hyzered so much I came back to the tee side of the creek and am dry and safe! I approach and leave myself a 15′er for the three. I foolishly hurry the putt to get out of the way of the guys who let me play through and botch the putt. DOH!

#16-4

#17-3

I get to #18 heading towards a 58. If I can deuce this I can go 57 and tie for DFL and pull out the DFL “win”. It’s the short basket, so it’s a hyzer through some trees that I haven’t been able to execute lately. I decide to try the wide hyzer line and hope to have some kind of look for the deuce putt. My drive goes dead straight and buries me in some thick shrubbery on the right side of the fairway. Deuce is off the table. I’m going to have to tomahawk over and out and hopefully get close. While not avoiding DFL this would help me break 60. I had told Brian at the mobile DO command center that I didn’t think I could break 60 so I am at least working on the moral victory here! I actually execute the overhead and leave myself a 30′ putt for three which would give me a 58. I blow it. Disheartened I totally botch my 15′ comeback putt for 4 off the top of the tray to eat the 5. Hello 60!

Gold

Bobby Noble 55

Waymon Peet 55

Brian Cooke 57

Joel Provencher 57

Mike Peyton 58

Hawk 60

DFL Tour Record: 1-2

More photos in the Yahoo! group including the missing haunted house.

Next week Jerman and I take the NutSac Challenge to the Seneca Creek Soiree for two days of hot mano y mano action. It’s also a DFL Tour stop for me. That’s right…two treats in one!

Have you ever seen Dallas from a DC-9 at night,

I had the week off so I thought I’d get some discing in…

Monday:

I decide to head over to Rockburn and work with the new Roadrunner Carrie had given the official Chill treatment to:

It’s in the high 60′s but the wind is howling in the 35+ mph range. Of course everyone says the Understable Bag of Thunder won’t work in big winds. I offer this drive on #14 as proof to the contrary:

Shockingly I made the putt for the deuce. There was nothing else noteworthy about this practice round.

Tuesday:

I thought I’d try something I rarely do because my work/gym schedule precludes my participation and the “Smokin” Joe round at Druid Triples years ago convinced me that this wasn’t my scene…yes I’m talking about random draw doubles/triples! This is the disc equivalent of swinging, but just like in actual swinging you never get partnered with the Victoria Secret model, but with the fat/hairy European guy with an accent & game you don’t understand. Sparky has been running Tuesday night doubles at the Swamp for years. Jorge plays here every Tuesday, so I texted him that I was considering doing this. He was shocked as everyone knows my aversion to this activity. However three things swayed me to give it a go:

1: It’s next to College Park so I could hit my alma mater before the round.

2. Hard Times Cafe chili afterwards.

3. Confidence that there is comedy gold in this.

I arrive at the Swamp:

I’m about half a hour early. Our congenial host is nowhere to be found. I run into Silverwolf who for some unknown reason is throwing all of his shots left handed…and poorly. Then Bobby Vodka starts practice putting with his DX Rhynos which quickly digresses into the three of us doing trick putts. The crowd grows and resembles a group of day laborers waiting for a gig:

Sparky arrives and collects our two bucks per head and our mini for the random draw. He shuffles the minis and seems to be having way to much fun fondling them in his Felix the Cat bag:

Of course I’m in the first pair out of the bag and the other mini belongs to Dub:

I can just go sit in my car and wait for Dub to roll in with the winnings. Then I learn that Dub has loaned a mini to Mac who has shown up without his bag! Who goes to disc without their discs?!?! Is he that guy who shows up at a gunfight with a knife? No he’s the guy who shows up at a gunfight with two adult beverages and a container of salted nuts! So Mac is rolling with borrowed Dub discs…a Firebird, a Nuke, a Pirahna. Hmmm… I’ve played with Mac in the past and he’s comparable to me so we should be okay. Plus his name has three letters in it just like Dub! Then Mac informs me that he wants to be called Cam during the round. Hmmm… We’re carded with John & Dan. Sizing them up I’m confident Mac and I can at least win the card. We’re playing from the white tees. The Swamp is a total pitch and putt course for the most part. Last week the winning score was -16 from the red (short) tees.

Mac: Just park everything, and I’ll make the putts.

Hawk: Deal.

Mac starts us on the path to victory on #1:

So I put the Coyote 8′ past the basket. Mac steps up and misses the putt. I look at him with amazement.

Mac: I missed that on purpose.

Hawk: Because?

Mac: I don’t know.

Hawk: Don’t make me miss this on purpose.

Mac: I bet you won’t.

Sparky: (from an adjacent hole) Don’t challenge him Mac!

I give it 21% effort and miss the putt in protest. It’s the start to another random draw doubles round. I remember now why I don’t do this!

John saves a three on #4:

At this point Mac and I have gone 3-3-3-3. We already realize we have no chance of winning tonight. Now it’s just a pissing contest. On #6 John hyzered early before the left side mando of the goal posts. Dan had powered past the right side mando so they had to use John’s drive. Dan making the left turn back to the fairway:

John saving another three on #7:

Heading to #8′s tee we pass Sparky’s card as they prepare to tee off on #12. I ask if there’s any possibility to change partners. Mac & I are still even through 7 holes! Sparky laughs awkwardly and tees off:

On #9 John parks the pin with an Avenger SS:

The blue disc on the ground is his drive. He’s just putted out to go up on us by one. Mac collects another three for us. I see my car in the parking lot and seriously consider walking off. Dan drives and makes the deuce putt on #10:

#10′s famous brick oven tree:

On #13 Dan unleashes his Buzzz and parks the pin:

Mac and I get another three after my 35′er boinks off the top. On #14 Mac parks the pin:

That’s his blue/green disc on the ground you can see as Dan makes a failed bid for the deuce. Mac insists on taking my pic as I convert our first deuce of the round:

Like much of the rest of the round the timing was just a tad bit off on this photographic effort. I guess this is why Mac’s sports photography career never really took off. John daggers us again with a deuce on #16:

On #17 I land the Aviar 10′ from the basket. I return the deuce putt photo favor to Mac:

Dan & John punk us by 1.

Wednesday:

I decided to make the 1 hour drive and play doubles at Seneca. It was a chance to get some practice in on a course I don’t play that often. As I roll into a lightly packed parking lot (random doubles at Seneca doesn’t draw like RD at the Swamp) Buckethead (your congenial host) peers around from the back of his Element and grins at seeing me. He provides car side service as he walks over, takes my money and returns with change before I’ve gotten myself and the bag out of the Civic. No minis used here, it’s the labeled poker chip draw from a bag:

I used the same technique back in my days of running Patapsco Doubles. Buckethead inherited his set from Metl who used to run a Winter Doubles league at Seneca before he entered the witness protection program.

The park is pimping some plastic at the Ranger station:

A Wedge? I’m waiting for Innova to introduce a disc called the Slice! It’s 50 degrees with a 20ish mph wind. As luck would have it I draw poker chip A. El Tie Dye draws the other A. Partners! We’re carded up against Kelly & Andy. We’re playing the short tees on 10-27.

Hawk: Are these guys any good?

El Tie Dye: Well Andy is about as good as me.

Hawk: Okay…

El Tie Dye: Kelly is better than me.

Hawk: Is he better than me?

El Tie Dye: Of course he is. I’m better than you!

Hawk: No you aren’t.

El Tie Dye: Yes…yes I am.

Hawk: Whatever…

El Tie Dye: They are both left handed which could prove advantageous on a couple of holes…

Hawk:…a couple!?!?!

El Tie Dye: So how do you want to do this?

Hawk: I don’t care.

El Tie Dye: Well we could alternate drives, one of us could always drive first…I like to have the the other person shoot first on the selected drive…unless you want to do it different.

Hawk: Shut up and throw.

El Tie Dye tees off on #10:

El Tie Dye gets us 25′ below the basket. I make the putt. We start out with a deuce. The lefties deuce also. Kelly makes this deuce putt on #11:

Okay maybe he is better than us. On #12 I unleash an awesome looking drive through the gap that has El Tie Dye and I very excited. Then the wind shoves the disc to the right and slams it into the ground.

It still gave us a chance at the three. I execute an impressive up…

El Tie Dye: That was impressive!

Which El Tie Dye converts for the three:

The guys had told me about the scarecrow hoodie on #13 that apparently has been around unclaimed for weeks now:

Curiously there was no living thing within 150′ of the scarecrow hoodie. On #14 El Tie Dye and I both execute perfectly flawed turnovers into the hill. Because I’m a hero my botched drive went slightly further forward and higher up the hill than El Tie Dye’s leaving him this fabulous deuce putt opportunity:

The basket is 100′ forward and 25′ left. We both somehow got through the trees and down to the ground. I made another 25′er to push the hole against the lefties. On #15 we take El Tie Dyes drive. I zip the Aviar right over the top of the basket from 100′ giving us an easy 15′er for the three on my nemesis hole! El Tie Dye misses the putt. I step up, put the Aviar right in the center of the chains, and somehow it comes back out! Walking away…

Hawk: (muttering) I made that putt…

El Tie Dye: Yes you did.

Hawk: How did that come out?

El Tie Dye: There are forces in the universe…

Hawk: Shut up.

On #17 I zip the Leopard past the basket giving El Tie Dye this deuce opportunity…

…that he easily converts for us. On #18…

…El Tie Dye…

…hits a tree about 30′ in front of the tee. I boldy predict that:

A: We’ll be taking my drive

B: That I can get into the clearing where the basket is

El Tie Dye: You have no chance of reaching that basket.

Hawk: It’s totally in my range.

El Tie Dye: No chance.

I unleash another fantastic looking drive (flash back to #12) and the three guys are ohhhing and ahhhing right up until the moment that I hit some invisible twig branch and slam down to the ground.

Kelly tees off on #18:

Andy tees off on #18:

We three. The lefties four. We get to hole #20:

El Tie Dye: Going to be tough to beat them on this one.

Hawk: You think?

It’s a straight tunnel shot and if you clear the tunnel then you turn to 3 o’clock and head down a slope to the basket. Kelly converts Andy’s drive for the deuce:

We didn’t get a deuce. On #21 El Tie Dye begins a string of holes where he throws his drive into the ground anywhere from 50-75′ in front of the tee. This puts us at a competitive disadvantage. On #22…

(the hubcap has wandered over here now)…I Leopard another drive that looks like it might turn and head towards the basket (my record of accomplishing that on this hole over my career stands at something like 2-29) once again eliciting some ohhhh’s & ahhh’s until I catch the edge of the tree that I had boldly predicted on the tee I would hit. Meanwhile the lefties are within putting range…

…which Kelly easily converts. On #23 I get us up to the mando/clowns mouth. The lefties are in trouble on the right side of the fairway.

Hawk: Blood in the water!

El Tie Dye: That could be a five.

The lefties throw their second shots:

Hawk: Or a six!

El Tie Dye: We could get 2 back here!

El Tie Dye then lasers his blue DX (who throws DX!?!?) Roc down the clowns mouth and we start thinking 3! I take the Coyote and turn it over a bit more than intended, but it proceeds to wiggle it’s way around, by and through approximately 37 trees to hyzer in for a skip landing that looks to be 5′ from the basket! El Tie Dye and I simultaneously soil ourselves. Meanwhile the lefties are lumber jacking their way down the hole. We mosey confidently down the clowns mouth to see the blue Roc is impressively short of the basket. The Coyote is nowhere in sight. El Tie Dye finds it down the hill behind the basket. We take the Coyote and promptly miss two anhyzer putts. We only get one stroke on the lefties. On #24 the lefties get another deuce…the bastards! On #25 El Tie Dye takes out the Katana…again:

Hawk: Seriously. You can’t throw that.

El Tie Dye: Yes I can.

Hawk: Shall I recount the drives of failure with that thing up to this point?

El Tie Dye: I know, but it’s perfect for this hole.

Hawk: Yeah…

El Tie Dye tees off with the Katana which goes straight for about 0.9 seconds then meat hooks left into the trees. I look smugly at El Tie Dye. My Leopard looked promising but hit one of the last trees before the needed left turn. We find the Katana 20′ from the basket. I make the deuce putt for us to prove the point…never mind.

Arriving at #27 we are three throws behind the lefties so we aren’t winning the card. It’s going to be another Nomads roll out for me. El Tie Dye steps up with his blue Roc and drives it 25′ into the tree directly in front of the tee:

Game, set and match!

Saturday:

Coach had texted me Friday looking for some Patapsco action the next day. We haggled back and forth and agreed to play 27 from the longs at Seneca instead. I continue my testing of the Roadrunner/Leopard combo vs. the Leopard/Leopard combo in the bag. We figured that based on ratings Coach should beat me by 9 throws over 27 holes so that was the goal for each of us.

Take an old bathtub, put a frame around it to turn it into a planter. String some OB yellow line around it to give it a little quirkiness and you have this botanical masterpiece on hole #1:

Hole #2…now this is a bench!

I’ve seen less impressive decks on the back of houses. Coach out drives the basket on #4…

…and makes the comeback for the deuce:

Tsunami debris?

On the first loop of nine Coach beats me by 4 throws. On #13 Coach makes this putt to save a three:

On the middle loop Coach beats me by 2 throws to go up 6 throws overall for the round. The course beautification effort continues at #25′s tee:

We arrive at hole 27. Coach is the ratings predicted 9 throws up on me. If I push the hole I can earn the “tie”. My drive hits an early cedar and my approach anhyzer goes right too soon and leaves me a 35′ putt for the three. Meanwhile Coach rolls under the cedars and is in the fairway with an open look at the basket. His approach is a little short. I’m out and my effort for 3 misses. Coach steps up and daggers me with this putt…

…to beat me by 10 throws for the round!

Quote from one of my buddies at the gym in the afternoon:

Disc golf, it’s golf for the 99%.

Sunday:

Jerman and Jorge had decided to take the Bible Study Tour to Delaware to play in an Association tourney at Iron Hill.

I declined to participate. Dick wanted to go for two reasons:

1. He’s never played there.

2. It’s right next to the casino!

I counseled Dick not to go and risk a point against Jerry as I’ve played the course (and won a title there) and know that the layout plays into Jerman’s strengths. However the Hero of Rockburn remains delusionaly overconfident and headed north to battle Jerman mano y mano.

I went over to Rockburn and had a solo Leopard/Leopard practice round after lunch in possible preparation for next months Rumble there. Just a few quick shots from that round…

Deuce on #3:

Monday I deuced #14 with the Roadrunner on the left side of the basket, today I deuced #14 with the Leopard on the right side of the basket:

I own #14! I have no idea what kind of bug this is:

The Batman Leopard was turning and appeared to be online towards #15′s basket across the creek when altitude was lost, it crashed into the far side embankment and slid down out of sight. It’s either in bounds…

…or naturally it’s out of bounds. The locals of Rockburn await you on Wednesdays:

Meanwhile during the morning and afternoon I’m getting text updates from the front courtesy of both Jerman and Dick…

Dick: …getting brutalized.

Dick: I’m sure Jerry has to be killing me.

Jerman: …I shot 83 had 3 bad holes.

Dick: Holy crap, 87!

Jerman: A 6-8-6- in a row will kill a good round…

Dick: Better than I hoped. It felt much worse.

Dick: Unfortunately I stubbed my toe hard while adding up my score on the way back.

Dick: Think I sprained it, that won’t help.

Hello! Injuries are never an excuse. I won a title at Scarboro a few years back after spraining my throwing wrist in the first round after a fall.

Dick: This will either be an epic comeback or he will win going away.

Dick: I can’t count on him shooting that badly again.

Jerman: (quoting Dick) Damn I could have bought an entire sheet of brownies! (the boys lunched at Boston Market).

Jerman: (again quoting Dick after Dick gets a look inside Jerman’s cooler and sees Jer’s tourney standard oversized Snickers bars…) C’mon man give me one, who’s your fat buddy?

Jerman: I have him by 2 overall with 3 left to play.

Jerman: He is attempting to reel me in, but looks tired.

Jerman: Jerman 86…Dick 87

Dick: Got it down to 2 with 5 to go but couldn’t Flutie my way to victory.

Scores for the day:

Jerman…83 86 (169)

Dick…87 86 (173)

2012 NutSac Challenge Standings:

Jerman: 2

Dick: 1

Hawk: 0

More photos (that if you don’t see you won’t sleep tonight wondering about them) are available in the Yahoo! group.

As predicted an email from our TD…

The park will now be open at 7:30 a.m. on 4/7/12. Check-in begins at 8:45 a.m. and closes at 9:30 a.m. We’ll cya on Saturday.

Stephen Badger

Thursday:

Dick’s back out at Patapsco practicing. The hero of Rockburn is convinced that this will be Jerman’s Waterloo. He went out and practiced Sunday solo and reported to me that he shot a 70 on the Green Monster. He texted me after work saying he was heading back out and invited me to join him. I had to decline as I was at the gym. He calls me after his round:

Dick: Just shot a 69 on the Green Monster!

Hawk: Impressive, but that is a practice round which is different than actual tourney play as you know.

Dick: Whatever man. Jerman’s going down.

Hawk: Okay.

Dick: Dude I saw the hottest high school girl in the parking lot…

Hawk: Okay you’re starting to creep me out again.

Dick: Well she was probably a little older than that…

Hawk: (click)

Saturday:

I roll into Patapsco a little after 0815 hours:

There is no line at the guard gate. There is no guard there to collect the entrance fee. I’m shocked. We’re on the “honor system” to pay. I pay and proceed in. I’m the first of the three of us to arrive. Jorge Cafe rolls in a few minutes behind me and parks nearby. Jerman follows a few minutes later. The three of us decide to warm-up by playing holes 1-3 and 10 before heading up the hill to sign in with TD Badger. Jorge fuels up for his upcoming battle in the Grandmothers division with some 5 hour energy crap:

Once again note the enormous speakers in the Kia! Warming up I’m playing better than Jerman which makes me go hmmmm… We check in, which to Badger’s credit is smooth and quick and we receive our players pack. You get your choice of a DX Aviar or a DX Roc with a park stamp on it. You also get one of Badger’s business cards.

He’s an employee of the state park system. He’s a “naturalist”. None of the three of us are quite sure what that means, but we’re fearful it’s somehow similar to being a nudist. Note the nice manicure on Jorge’s hand!

Jerman catches me and Dick conspiring against him:

At tourney central I run into Sparky who as you know is a full time member of the cult now:

You’ll note that Sparky has finally adopted the full NutSac philosophy and is only carrying 4 discs! Today he’s rolling with his Aviar, his Roc, his Roadrunner and a Mamba. Let’s go down the checklist:

1. Ponytail

2. Tie dye attire

He must be the TD!

TD Badger conducts an efficient players meeting…

Jorge: I think he’s wearing a tapestry of some sort.

Hawk: I was thinking it was an Oriental rug.

Co TD Fred:

Analysis of this photo later resolved the debate Jorge and I had regarding whether or not Fred was picking his nose during the players meeting. During the meeting Jerman (blue hoodie) moseyed over to chat to Bobby Vodka (black KFC visor…no I don’t make this stuff up):

Here you see them reacting to TD Badgers thoughts on organized religion and sports hydration during the tourney. In the background you’ll note Shawn asking for a water bottle check on Bobby Vodka. Dick has managed to pull some strings with TD Badger to get the three of us (and Jorge) on the same card in round one. We’re starting on hole #10. Here Dick poses and proves that black is not always slimming:

During the players meeting TD Badger informed us that we’d be playing long to silver (the short layout) the first round and then the Green Monster (long to green) the second round. He also mentioned that there would be a videographer and some still photographers roaming the course during the event. The media herd congregate around our card on hole #10. We engage in some witty banter with them. The photographers are our age. The videographer is an American University grad student. She’s hot. We want to look good. We tee off. Dick is in the fairway. Jerman is leaning against the fence in bounds. Jorge is in the fairway. I smack into the tree just in front of the short tee. I hit another early tree on my second throw. On my third throw I’m in the cluster of trees separating the long pin on #10 with 18′s fairway. Dick yells in glee when I land in the cluster. Jerman finally gets to throw and he also lands in the cluster.

Dick: You turned yours over also Jer!

Jerman: I’m going towards the basket you idiot!

Dick: We’re going to the silver basket you idiot!

Whoops! We practiced the Green Monster so much that I was on auto-pilot and I’m throwing to the wrong basket. Jerman is simply following me. Now I’m in the middle of the crap laying three looking at a 5 or 6. Full blown panic is about to overtake me. Jerman is 15′ away from my disaster, but on the edge of the cluster so he’s looking okay for his four. I’m looking around crazily for a way out.

Jerman walks me through a plan like an air traffic controller talking a passenger through a landing whose taken over the controls of a jet liner after the pilot passes out from food poisoning. Meanwhile Dick is 15′ out with a putt for his 3. He’s smelling early blood and is joyful. Jerman ups so he’s got a 4 locked in. I up so I’ve got the 5 locked in. Dick is low on his 3 putt so he takes a 4 to push the hole with Jerman:

I’m only 1 back after the worse possible start possible. Jerman and I exchange knowing looks. Dick is dismayed. Jerman rights the ship with this 3 on #11:

Dick tees off on #12…

…and the wheels begin to come off. Jorge continues to fuel his machine at #13′s tee:

Jerman takes scores and has a personal message for our TD:

The Dancing Bear’s 2nd shot on #13:

Jorge’s second shot on #13:

Dick trying to save a 3 on #13:

At #14′s tee Jerman and I have both pulled ahead of Dick. He’s gone from a giddy high at #10 to a depressed low in just 4 holes:

He’s not a factor the rest of the day. $25 gets your name on a stick!

Arts and crafts on #16′s bench:

Jerman: I see skulls in there:

Jorge is in a bad place on #18.

It’s the same damn cluster of trees I was in on #10. This was a dagger by Jerman. He’s botched his approach on #18. I’m thinking I’m getting a stroke back on him (he’s ahead of me by 2 at this point) and I’m underneath the basket for a drop-in 3. He saunters over…

…and makes this putt! Then things got interesting! On #1 Dick throws a roller off the tee that goes horribly awry. He’s not even halfway to the basket. His 2nd shot floats way right of the basket. He has this putt for his 3:

He misses and he’s behind the v tree you see in the background with a long comebacker for his four. Smelling blood in the water Jer and I position ourselves with cameras ready. Dick asks us to move a little to each side. He putts…

…he hits solid chains (note Jerman in the background exulting) and his putter bounces off the pole and hits the ground and rolls right back towards Dick! Dick’s putt for 5 misses:

It’s a 6! It’s a disaster. Then things got really uncomfortable. We move to #2. There’s a mando on the right side of the fairway telling you to stay to the left. The three of us tee off. Dick is last. Jorge and I are standing to the right of the tee box with a clear look at the mando. Dick tees off. I see his pink TL go under the mando arrow and to the right of the mando stump:

Hawk: He missed the mando.

Jorge: Yup he missed it.

We walk up and Dick argues that he made the mando. Jorge and I stand firm. Jerman pipes in that he also saw the mando miss. Dick is livid.

Dick: If that’s what you guys need to do to win!

Jorge mutters to me: If 3 guys tell me I missed a mando I wouldn’t argue it.

Dick throws from the drop zone and takes his four:

It’s a tough hit after just going six on #1. To try and ease the tension in the group Jorge whips out his phone and shares some porn with me. Then things got really awkward! I tee off on #3 and my Batman Leopard is up too high and hyzering. There’s a mando on the left side of the fairway telling you to stay right. I’m stepping off the tee to watch the flight. I believe I make the mando and hit one of the trees behind the mando and kick left. Dick calls it a missed mando. We turn to Jorge and Jerman who both say they didn’t have clean looks at it so they can’t make the call. Oh oh. We walk up and Dick and I debate my landing. Since it’s just the two of us debating the situation I use the old “Benefit of doubt goes to the player” and throw forward as if I made the mando. Suddenly it’s very quite…

Jorge putts on #4:

We get to #9 and harmony is more or less back in place among the four of us. Once again I think I have a golden opportunity to get a stroke back on Jerman after I make a heroic approach from the wrong side of the road…

and Jerry fluffs his approach. He needs to make this putt to save his 3…

…which he does! The bastard! Scores from the first round:

Jerman: 59

Hawk: 62

Dick: 70

That’s the 70 he wanted to shoot in the afternoon round. Jorge shoot 68 in the Grandmothers division just to rub salt in Dick’s numerous open wounds. He’s not happy. We lunch on catered BBQ and head out for our second round. Jerman is on the lead card with title hopes. I’m on the third card with Larry (who is better than me), Darrell, and your 2011 NutSac Swamp Stomp Intermediate Champion Travis; who I’m supposedly better than since his rating is underneath the Tripwire. Dick is on the last card in Advanced. This round passes without any drama at all compared to round 1. Larry quickly demonstrates why he’s better than us and pulls away. He shoots a 69 and eventually ties Jerman for 3rd overall. Darrell starts off slowly and gives Larry a late round run for the card. Travis and I engage in a battle of two guys who are having a really bad 2nd round.

Larry makes a brave putt for his 3 on #15:

Travis runs his 3 putt on #15…

…and then putts for his 4:

Yeah it was that kind of an afternoon. Darrell teeing off on #7:

Travis’s tomahawk 2nd shot on #8:

We finish on #9 where we see the lead card of Grandmothers teeing off on #5. Here’s Sparky teeing off…

…he shoot an impressive 57 in round one with his 4 disc NutSac, but faired much worse in the afternoon. Scores from the 2nd round:

Dick: 70 He’s consistent! (140)

Jerman: 72 (131)

Hawk: 78 (140)

I fail to reel in Jerman in a classic fisherman opportunity and Dick redeems himself in the afternoon to tie me for the day.

2012 NutSac Challenge Standings:

Jerman: 1

Dick: 1

Hawk: 0

1. Could you define “appropriately” please?

2. Last year Badge and his wing man Fred were running this show and the line of shame at the registration/sign-in table remains a thing of legend. If participants are “discouraged” from queueing up at the gate before 0900 I can’t imagine that the park will process 70ish cars through their entrance gate (you know the park will have someone there to collect the entry fee knowing a tourney is coming as opposed to the usual “honor system”) and then everyone parks, and signs in…in 30 minutes?!?! Wait until players start whining about no time to warm up. Fortunately Dick and I haven’t warmed up since 2010 so we might actually have a competitive advantage under this scenario.

Side bets are already being placed on what time we actually tee off next Saturday, or if the gate opening time mysteriously gets changed to 0800.

I contact Coach on Friday to see if he wants to get in a practice round at Patapsco on Saturday, but he replies that he’s just completed one (playing hooky?) and is resting up for Sunday’s Whispering Falls tourney. I hear from Jerman later on Friday and we agree to meet at the park at 1000.

I arrive to find Jerman there with Odeana. Excellent. They’ve brought their kids. Not so much. Dean is sporting Jerman’s 2011 Champions bag:

We begin our round. Jerman’s daughter begins to interrogate me:

McKenzie: Why are you wearing work pants to play Frisbee in?

Hawk: Frisbee is a patented product name. This is disc. These are retired work pants.

McKenzie: You’re not old enough to be retired.

Hawk: No that means that I don’t wear these to work anymore.

McKenzie: Whatever.

Once again I remember why I never had kids and generally avoid conversations with 10 year olds.

This is disc:

As is this:

Back on #4′s tee I spotted a member of the cult getting out of his car with a buddy to throw some plastic. Walking down #9′s fairway we pass them as they are walking up to 9′s tee.

Hawk: Hey is that a NutSac?

Player X: Yeah.

Now this is of course totally lame on my part. Obviously I know it’s a NutSac. I’m carrying one. I’m wearing a NutSac hoodie and a hat. It’s like a lame opening line trying to pick up a hot chick, or whatever Dick said to Ms. Cocktail dress above.

This is cult member Dan and his NutSac:

Check out Dean’s form on her 2nd shot on #10:

Jerman scrambling (and missing) on #10:

This is disc:

Seriously people…you’re dropping every empty you have on the course?

I’m two up on Jerman as we play #13. After an excellent 2nd shot by Jer which appears to get him down the clowns mouth towards the hole he steps aside and starts fiddling with his phone. It appears that his assumption that his little league practice (please note he’s a coach, not a player, though that’s an easy mistake to make based on his stature) would be rained out has proven wrong. He has a putt for three while I’m hacking towards a five. He declares he will make the putt and tie things up before he departs. He’s 15′ below the hole. He doinks the tray and the Omega Supersoft gets on edge and begins rolling down hill towards the river with Jer scampering after it. He makes a decent approach and in for his 5. He’s still 2 throws behind me. He and the family race for the parking lot as I finish the round.

Walking up #14 solo I again cross paths with Dan and his buddy…

Dan: So do you work for NutSac?

Hawk: I’m loosely affiliated with the company.

Dan: So they pay you?

Hawk: Yes…in Krugerrands. That’s what the snap pouch in front is actually for.

Dan: Cool!

Returning to the car I’ve got text messages from Dick. He’d flown back from Vegas on the red eye and managed to wake up before noon. I’m heading off for lunch, and he’s looking for some afternoon practice action at Patapsco. Since I had been demoing the Mamba in the morning I figured it might be a good idea to get the normal bag back on the course for some practice so I agree to meet back at the park at 1430 for a second round of long to long Green Monster action. Obviously I have to get to the bottom of the photo:

Hawk: It looks like you accosted some woman in a shopping mall.

Dick: Totally. She was way hot.

Hawk: How did you get her to agree to pose with you?

Dick: I told her I knew you.

Hawk: Always a solid play. You almost managed to hide your erection with the Starbucks cup.

Dick: I wasn’t trying to hide it.

This is disc:

The Dancing Bear makes this putt on #14 to save a three:

On #15 Dick Cro’s right down the middle of the fairway setting himself up for a rare 3. His approach goes sailing past the basket. Past the basket is a downhill that if treeless would qualify for World Cup downhill consideration. He tries to get back up towards the basket:

Yes that’s a river back there. Yes it’s a real river, not like the “river” at Rockburn a few weeks ago. This shot hits metal, bounces right, gets on edge and succumbs to gravity and the pull of the river. Dick’s next attempt to land near the basket:

Dick jumped out to an early 2 throw lead on me. I reeled him in and then went two up myself after his debacle on #15. Dick teeing off on #17:

He appears to also be wearing retired work pants…

Ole’!:

It’s never a good thing when you get to your disc and it’s upside down. It’s rare to find your disc upside down when you’ve hit nothing but the ground. It’s ever rarer to find your disc upside down with dirt inside it. This is Dick’s new toy his 135g Blizzard Destroyer after his tee shot on #1:

That must have been quite the crash landing. Dick banging a putt home on #4:

We’re jumping herds of discers as players are coming out to practice for next weekend. Eventually I’m 4 up on Dick, but he reels me in and we finish our 18 with him 1 up. That’s 36 holes in the books for me (long to long) on the day. Dick then suggests we play the back nine again but the red tees to the grey baskets. I agree because I’m a hero.

This is disc:

Dick deuces #11 and feeling confident he tees off with his putter on #12 setting up (note my Leopard to the right of the basket) this back to back deuce putt:

He misses, he’s down the hill…

… it’s a 4. I deuce and retake the lead. Dick Iphones me teeing off on #17:

Text from Jerman this morning: You should be in a Haggar commercial.

The Dancing Bear making a putt on #17:

We finish the back nine (my 45th hole on the day) and Dick’s back up to a 1 throw lead. I suggest we continue on the front. Dick agrees. We finally call it a day when on #4 Dick starts scattering shots to the point that I erase the 1 throw deficit and we’re back to being tied. 49 holes at Patapsco in one day for YDGH.

Text from Jerman: Dean was impressed at your stamina to return and play Dick.

I didn’t have the heart to tell Jer that wasn’t the stamina Dean was referring to.

More photos are in the Yahoo! group.

Where’s the ibuprofen,

About a month ago I approached Dick about partnering up for this event at Codorus. He backed out complaining that the restriction to putter use only really “limited the shot versatility and was going to be boring.” Wednesday night I get a text from Coach asking if I was interested in partnering up. I accepted. We debate team names and putters. We were very close to being The Dutch Rudders but finally settled on Masterputters. Coach was considering adding putters beyond his usual SS Wizards. I was going to stick to my usual KC Aviars.

Saturday morning I’m awakened by lightning and thunder. Not a good sign. On the drive up to Codorus I’m pelted by periods of hard rain. Not a good sign. I arrive at the park…

…to find lonely TD Wayne (not related to Donald) Trump…

…and an empty parking lot. I text Coach that there are only six cars here! Local legend Jay (dot) Gobrecht…

…is present and he’s gone the additional putter route (Banger? I hardly knew her!) and has partnered up with young hot shot Mike Zinn…

…who is sporting a Pig, a Classic Roc (didn’t that used to be a mid-range?), a plastic bag and some camo gear. They are playing as The Hobbits of Mushroom Manor.

Coach, YDGH and an empty parking lot:

The four of us head out to warm up and the Hobbits immediately start zipping the Classic Roc out ahead of our putters. They are also rolling the Pig (insert your own joke here) and flicking some Aviars. Note to Dick…you are trapped in linear thinking! We return for the players meeting. It turns out that there are 3 teams playing for ca$h and four teams playing for plastic. TD Trump sends the ca$h teams to hole #1 on the blue course and the plastic teams to blue #7 for some good old fashioned herd disc. Fortunately for us the rain driving to Codorus was the worse we got all day and we only actually used the umbrellas for about five holes in the middle of the round. Our layout is the blue course and the x-holes for a total of 27. Jdot fuels up before the round:

Joining our two teams are Jeremy and Brad playing as Fumunda Cheese. These guys are totally disc! Jeremy is forehand rolling an Arrow…

…off every tee! Brad on the other hand is carrying a full bag of every putter every made. He’s seriously got like 12 putters. He’s carrying an Aero and some tourney stamped putters that are 15+ years old.

On hole #1 Coach out drives the Hobbits Classic Roc with his Wizard:

We exchange knowing looks and resist the urge to giggle. TD Trump told us the mandos…

…weren’t in play for this event, so it was bombs away, or at least as much bombing as you can do with a putter. I still managed to make this mando on #3 to impress our card mates. Coach and I failed to execute the easy up and down for a three though that made us exchange knowing looks. There was no urge to giggle at this point. Hole #5 presented an excellent product placement opportunity…

…and some shots teeing off downhill, into a headwind, with a putter!

Brad:

Zinn:

Jdot:

Jdot saves a 3 on #8:

Jeremy and Brad forced to go over the top on #10:

Brad keeping his cigarette dry during throws:

This is Jdot flicking his pink Aviar in for a deuce on #11:

Coach made this putt for us to save our three on #11:

Brad throws this putt in on 1x for a deuce:

Jdot deuces 6x:

Coach also deuces 6x off his CTP drive:

Jeremy saves a three on 7x for the Cheese:

In the x-holes Jeremy and Brad give us all a review of a local gentlemen’s club they had visited the night before. Jdot and I take detailed notes.

Jdot captures me teeing off on 8x:

It’s high enough… it’s straight and hard…it’s pin balling off all those trees. Coach almost had the highlight of the day when his drive on 13 blue bounces off the top of the tray for a near ace. Naturally he missed the comeback deuce putt, but fortunately I made it. Final results were:

Cash division

1. The Hobbits of Mushroom Manor 79
J. and Mike Zinn

2. Masterputters 83
Dan Becker and Hawk Corrick

3. Fumunda Cheese 92
Brad Koppenheffer and Jeremy Degregorio

Plastic Division

1. Putter X 95
Ken Perkins and Ted Geesey

2. Stood Up 99
Dylan Davis and Wayne Trump

3. Last Minute 102
Dan Fuhrman and Benet Kuster

4. Liter Mates 104
Joe and Ky Stoebenau

More photos are in the Yahoo! group.

This year the DO boys were hosting an Association singles tourney on Saturday and a Z Tier doubles tourney on Sunday at Rockburn.

Saturday:

My cell phone rings as I’m turning around to go back to my place to get my camera which I forgot to throw into my NutSac the night before. It’s Dick. He’s forgotten his prescription sunglasses and is turning around and heading back to his place. The 2012 season is getting off to a solid start for us.

I arrive at the park and there is the general loitering around of disinterested practice putting and checking in with the TD going on. I find Jorge Cafe’ and Jerman among the crowd:

In two separate conversations I hear two versions of Jorge reentering his year long bet with Jerman.

Jorge: I realized that I would make 10 Association rounds this year so I figured I needed to man up and stick to my bet with Jerry. I can still take him after the debacle at Loriella.

Jerman: Man I think you totally shamed him so bad about backing out he’s back in. He’s covering my bet with you and Dick now!

Jorge is playing in a three man Advanced Masters field as he refuses to join Jer, Dick and me in the Advanced field. Jorge finishes DFL in his three man field at the end of the day. This will not be spoken of further.

If it’s a disc tourney you know that means it’s a fashion disaster. Chet Butler is well known for his garish socks. What you may not know is this trend is apparently catching on. Player X has joined Chet in the cult of socks that look like one of my polo shirts:

A sweater vest is bad enough. Here Snarky models not just a sweater vest, but a cardigan vest:

Note Jerman trying to avoid any association with this in the background.

TD Brian holds his standard fast paced players meeting. His rapid speech and pick-up truck stage makes this seem like a farm auction.

He reinforces this image further by referring to the creek that meanders through Rockburn repeatedly as “the river”. When taking questions from the players he twice refuses to answer my question about the gas mileage he gets in that pick-up.

Dick attends the players meeting and indicates that he’s ready to roll:

Note his new headgear for this season. I encouraged him to make the full hat transition and go with a beret in future events.

YDGH, Jerman & Dick prior to heading out to the course to begin the 2012 NutSac Challenge. In round one I’m carded with Jerman, Eric B. and Steve H. We’re starting on hole #6. By hole #7 Jer needs us to pull the car over and stop:

Jerman: Damnit I just pissed on my leg!

Jerman tees off on #7:

Fly little disc fly!

Eric working around some trees on #7:

Jerman executing a Jerry on #9:

The bench at #10 with some Dallas love for me:

Jerman putting on #11:

Steve tees off on #12:

Jerman captures me teeing off on #12. Note the form and inherent power. Note Eric looking away disinterestedly:

Eric taking the scenic route to #12′s basket over the barn:

More artwork courtesy of the picnic table at #13′s tee:

This picture didn’t work out. This is #14. Jerman is literally under a tree inside a bush to the right for his deuce putt. There’s no way he makes this. I got the yellow disc in the air, but not Jerman and the basket together. He made the putt:

That annoyed me. Now we’re in the back-up on #15. The card behind us has a gallery following them:

This is annoying Bobby N. all morning. Eventually we end up with three cards loitering around 15′s tee. Another one of these Player X guys walks up to Steve:

Player X: How are you shooting?

Steve: I’m 2 over.

Player X: (bitch slaps Steve on his left check!)

Bobby’s jaw drops open. Jerman’s eyes get as big as his beloved Sidewinder. Player X walks away. We ask Steve about this and he laughs it off saying Player X is a guy he knows from Scarboro who “does stuff like that all the time.”

Jerman and I spend the rest of the weekend debating if the slap was the result of Steve shooting better than Player X, hence the slap was Player X being mad at losing to Steve (Hawk theory) or Player X trying to motivate Steve to shoot better than 2 over (Jerman theory). At press time we don’t have an answer to this question. It was certainly one of the wildest/funniest moments either of us have ever seen at a tourney.

Bobby: If he’d slapped me I’d been up off that bench.

Jerman: I’d at least bear hugged him up and got him into the wall.

Hawk: He’s be listed as DNF if that had been me.

Jerman putting on #15:

During the round Jerman has moved out to a two throw lead on me. This grows to four throws. I reel him back down to two…

Eric is a bit off the fairway on #18:

Since the tourney has 80 players the DO Boys created a ghost hole between #18 and the temporary #19 hole they created with a portable basket. Here’s the ghost hole:

Jorge is analyzing this photo for images of electrical energy.

My first deuce of the round:

Note Jerman walking away in disgust, Eric marking his CTP just to show up my best effort of the round, and Steve cringing as he believes he hears the guy from #15 back on the tee.

Steve tries to save a three on hole #3:

Now we’re in the back-up for hole #4. There’s three cards hanging out here again in a few minutes. We sit on the bench off hole #5 and watch Coach Becker (who had just threed #4 with a wicked forehand approach) tee off in his snazzy black compression t-shirt:

Meanwhile back at #4′s tee Bobby waits for his turn:

The round ends with Jerman and Dick tied at 62. I coast into halftime with a 66 as I give two throws back to Jerman on #4 and #5 to close out our round. During lunch Jorge shows off his latest pimp out to the Kia Rondo:

Round 2 finds me starting on hole #8 with Bobby, Andrew and a different Erik. Jorge’s card of shame is starting ahead of us on #9. I find Snarky and his NutSac there:

We get to #9. In round one on #9 Jerman had attempted to gun across the creek (or river if you are prone to believe our TD) so I figured if he could I could. My drive then landed on the path up the far side embankment to my excitement, but then had got up on edge and Eric and I had watched it roll down the path towards the “river”.

Eric: There’s a lot of ground at the bottom of the embankment.

Hawk: It’s in the water.

It was in the water for a circle four:

This round I was determined to have another go at it. The Coyote cleared all the guardian trees and hyzered at the bottom of the “rivers” edge. I heard a lot of foliage crashing so I figured there was a good chance it was safe:

Yeah that’s another circle four. Bobby tries one of his infamous turbo putts on #9:

Bobby’s turbo putt on #10 meets with a similar result:

Erik whiffs on #10:

Andrew makes a run on #11:

Bobby on #11:

Erik boldly going between the trees on #17:

After #3 we are once again backed up waiting to play #4. There’s a couple of random dudes who have foolishly wandered onto the course during an 80 person tourney. They have questions. We have answers. One of them is wearing a green tuxedo t-shirt. It’s rare to even see a traditional black and white tuxedo t-shirt anymore let alone a special St. Patricks Day green edition. I told him he already had the necessary fashion sense to be a discer:

Finally we get onto #4′s tee. Bobby, Erik and Andrew go hard trying to make it out to the fairway chasing the elusive three:

Erik boldy goes forehand roller!

Some of the Christmas decorations are still up at Rockburn:

On #5 there is a crowd waiting to get onto #4. Dick is there chattering it up with Buckethead, and Iron and several other players. I’m on the tee. #5 is long, but it’s downhill so you always think you should be able to deuce it. I saw a guy ace it a couple of years ago warming up. As I’m going through my drive ritual of disc spinning I hear:

Iron: Hold up Hawk’s driving.

Dick: Please…noise is not going to bother Hawk.

It’s a two. Andrew makes this on #6 as our day is nearly over:

Dick and Jerman were on the same card in round 2. Jerman stepped in some dog poop before beginning his 2nd round on #5 and then smeared feces all over the teepad. This was foreshadowing of his afternoon effort. Dick grabs a quick two throw lead on Jerman and Jerman never threatens. Dick takes Jerman down 58-62 despite drives like this:

I improved to 60 but was too far back to make a real run after the morning debacle. Final scores for the day:

Dick: 62-58 (120)

Jerman: 62-62 (124)

Hawk: 66-60 (126)

Unofficial results are here: http://www.pdga.com/tournament_results/78785

That gives the first point of the season to Dick.

2012 NutSac Challenge Standings:

Dick: 1

Jerman: 0

Hawk: 0

Sunday:

It’s back to Rockburn for doubles. Dick and I are playing as The Antagonistas. Jerman and Bobby are playing as 70′s Klassic Porn Starz. It’s misting and cooler than it was forecast to be. Both teams will be battling it out in the Silver division. Dick’s ( aka Dr. Evil) performance from Saturday has not impressed all of the participants:

Today’s players meeting is less dramatic:

Dick’s players meeting question: Does anyone know the phone number for the pizza place?

We’re actually carded with the 70′s Klassic Porn Starz in round 1. It’s two rounds of best disc doubles on the exact same layout we played twice on Saturday. We begin on #5. I begin carrying Dick by making this putt:

Another putt made on #7:

Dick is wearing another bad hat. He limbos into his drive on #9:

Dick and I begin to pull away from Jerman and Bobby as I play much better than yesterday and Dick walks along to keep me company. Drives like this on #13 are making our deuces plentiful:

Dick looks on and wishes he could make a putt:

Jerman trying to make something happen on #15; eerily similar to a photo from Saturday:

Bobby tries the same shot…

…with the same result. My drive on #16 giving us another deuce after I make the putt:

On #17 the boys twin up again trying to make a putt:

My drive on #17 which was another deuce putt made by me for the Antagonistas.

Note Jerman going for the towel to wipe a stray tear away. By #1 Dick and I are just pounding Jerman and Bobby. Note Dick waving in the background as Jerman attempts this putt:

Jerman ruined this comedy moment for Dick and I as he made the putt.

Yeah I made this putt:

Dick really should have offered to carry my NutSac at this point.

Jerman and Bobby tee off on #4:

Bobby says, Ole’!” The round complete Dick makes the all important call in for pizza:

No not KFC…his other gig.

Dick and I are actually leading the Silver division after the first round. We’re starting on hole #4. Dick gets ready for the round after his pizza:

We’re up against Justin and DJ (and DJ’s girlfriend) this round whose team name I forget. They shot a 50 the first round so we only have them by one throw. They open up with a great drive on #4 to get out to the fairway and have a look down the clown’s mouth to the basket. DJ goes first…

…followed by Justin:

On #5 Dick actually begins contributing when his drive gets us to within 15′ and I make the turnover putt through the trees for the deuce. We begin to taillight DJ and Justin. On #6 I salvage a drive for us with the Coyote and Dick makes the putt for another deuce. On #7 Dick drives us down the fairway in his ninja attire:

Justin and DJ try and keep up:

I make the deuce putt for The Antagonistas. Walking up #8′s fairway DJ and Justin ponder their fate:

On #9 Dick and I botch the drives. I heroically get the Coyote down near the basket to salvage the three. Meanwhile Justin has bombed in a flick and makes this putt for the deuce:

On #13 Justin tries to make this awkward deuce putt:

My drives on #14 had been crap all weekend. For my fourth and final try I unleash the Roadrunner on a lazer that makes Dick yell: Get in! I hit the pole underneath the tray:

DJ and Justin are to the left of the basket for their deuce attempt. DJ goes first, hits metal and his putter rolls down the hill…all the way down the hill. Justin steps up…

…and makes their deuce taking some of the glory off my drive. From that point on Dick and I are on cruise control. I got us close on #15 but we botched the putt…twice. At the end of the day though we were triumphant holding on to our lead and winning the Silver division:

I have to actually wait around for my money this time:

Way more photos are in the Yahoo! group. Jerman took 40 himself. He may eventually upload them, but I’m still waiting for his pics from the May 2011 Rockburn Rumble, so I’m not holding my breath.
